A Velpeau sling is a specialized bandage used to immobilize the forelimb by securing it against the body in a flexed position. It is most commonly used in small animals following shoulder luxation, scapular fractures, or post-operative orthopedic procedures involving the shoulder or humerus.

Purpose and Benefits

• Prevents weight-bearing on the affected limb

Application

The limb is held in full flexion against the thorax using soft padding and elastic gauze, then reinforced with cohesive wrap. The bandage wraps around the torso and limb to fully restrict movement while still allowing chest expansion for breathing.

Considerations

• Should be checked frequently for slippage, tightness, or limb swelling
• Not ideal for large or heavy dogs due to risk of compression
• Requires strict monitoring to prevent pressure sores or respiratory restriction

The Velpeau sling is an excellent tool for non-weight bearing forelimb support, especially when external coaptation isn’t practical or desired.
