Traditional Robert-Jones Bandage

A highly padded and bulky bandage, the traditional Robert-Jones is designed to provide temporary stabilization of the limb, typically in emergency situations prior to surgery or definitive treatment. Its primary function is to control swelling, limit motion, and offer support in cases of fractures or significant soft tissue injuries—especially those distal to the elbow or stifle.

This bandage relies on massive amounts of cotton padding, layered evenly and compressed with stretch gauze and an outer wrap, to create rigid support without the use of a splint or fiberglass cast. The sheer bulk of the bandage is what provides its immobilizing effect, effectively replacing the need for external coaptation devices in the short term.

It’s not intended for long-term use, but rather to buy time while protecting the limb and reducing pain and swelling.

Key Points:

  • Used for temporary stabilization of fractures or severe limb trauma
  • Relies on bulk, not rigid materials, for support
  • Should be evenly compressed to avoid pressure sores
  • Needs regular monitoring and timely replacement
